Every tomato plant is almost as tall as me! Flowers are blooming, fruit is ripening, and nets have been placed around plants as protection from the pursuit of predators. These nets are very effective, now even I cannot get to many of the tomatoes. But this is a problem I’m grateful to have. Tomatoes in all shades of the rainbow, besides blue, weigh down vines for as far as the eye can see (if you are nearsighted). How far we’ve come! Just kidding, I’m looking at my dad’s tomatoes. There are at least 50 of them nearly ready to be picked- he’s amazing!
My own plants are mostly about knee-high, in the rainbow shades of RYG, and my harvest from yesterday was 4 tomatoes. One of my plants (with the Fred Kreuger tomatoes) nearly reaches my shoulders, though, and boasts 10 exceptional tomatoes-in-progress. It’s beautiful, more like a dream than a nightmare. I am actually really proud that my plants have any tomatoes considering that this season started with a 0% growth rate for weeks.
In other news, I have a big weed deal today. I’m meeting the don of a plant nursery to try and swap one of my tropical milkweed plants for a native milkweed plant. No questions asked. I feel like most places don’t let you just trade for things, but supposedly it’s legit. My mom read about it in an article from their local newspaper recently- apparently the boss is very into monarch conservation. I also called the joint to speak with the consigliere, and she claimed they would be happy to do business with me. We’ll see. I might leave my tropical milkweed in the car while I go in and inquire about the deal and get a vibe check. The last thing I want is an ambush from the Monarch And Flower Inspecting Association (MAFIA). I’m trying to join their side, but if a hit is what they’re after, it will be easier to run without carrying a tall plant.
